Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher thinks he was always going to struggle to meet expectations going into this F1 season, but insists that things will eventually go his way
The 41-year-old German has had very little luck since he returned to the sport with Mercedes GP at the start of the season, and a good result in his home race at Hockenheim this weekend would do much to reverse the negative opinions surrounding him. He admits that he's not been happy with his own performance.
“No, perfectly happy with my own performance is probably wrong to say,” Schumacher said on Thursday. “But put it this way. Yes, there is an expectation out there which I think you have to be realistic that it is impossible to meet. I [was retired for] three years and just to come back and start exactly where I finished with maybe a car that doesn't allow me to right now is probably unrealistic. I am not a magician, either. It just needs time. I take that time. I enjoy most of all this process.
“There were some setbacks and moments [this year] where you would, obviously, be a little bit angry. But, in general, that is what it is about. There are ups and downs and that is the excitement of motorsport. I know the final target where I want to go and I am very confident I can achieve this. That is what I am working for and what I am focusing on. There is the [sporting] side and there is the entertainment side of this whole circus. You just have to accept and see it is just part of that situation and do not bother too much about it.”
Intriguingly, Schumacher admitted that he joined Mercedes thinking that the team would continue to display the title-winning form it had last year when it was called Brawn GP.
